The roofs of an orchid house in travertine pink, pale and faintly violet in the shade sculpted render sweep across the frame with thick rounded edges, running off all four edges with a narrow strip of flat deep blue sky at the top. One continuous undulating roof rising and falling three times. Small round openings a hand's width each are punched through them. The render is coarse and open in texture, and moss with one band of hot pink flowering ground cover fills every valley. Hard high sun gives each shell its own crescent of shade along the underside of its edge. The repeat is counted and absurd — forty balcony fronts, ninety arches, two hundred louvres. Photographed on film, fine grain through the mid-tones and holding in the darks Benign and faintly biological, a building grown rather than built.
