An oil painting on panel laid over a warm red-orange underpainting that is left showing as a glowing red seam along every boundary in the picture, the paint scratched back with concentric arcs raked through the sky that reveal the red beneath. A long low barn with one dark opening, reduced to four or five plain geometric planes left plain and undecorated, under flat even daylight. The colour complementary and vibrating — a lilac-periwinkle sky, an olive field, chalk-pink walls — and every value impure and chalky, the lightest a warm pink-cream and the darkest a deep maroon-brown. Four layers back to front: the red underpainting, the broad flat planes of sky and field, the structure itself, then a fine top pass of raking sgraffito. Still, warm and quietly monumental, the scene at rest and empty of people.
