A hook-billed bird with a white ruff and amber eye fills the frame, head and shoulders only, turned three-quarter to the lens — invented but entirely plausible, photoreal, with every barb and filament held individually sharp and the crest standing up off the skull. Behind it flat saturated ochre, perfectly flat and featureless, and across it runs one hard-edged bar of flat colour, one hard black bar behind the skull, with its edges knife-sharp where it meets the ground and the ground plain either side of it, the animal's own two or three colours the only others in frame. Soft even light with every highlight held low. The plumage dense to the barb, the ground absolutely flat. Formal and absurd at once, a passport photograph of something invented.
