The facade of a perfume hall, built of deep oxide red, the pigment in the render itself lime-washed render, the colour mottled where it was brushed on by hand, fills the frame and runs off all four edges, square on to the camera with the plane parallel to the frame, close enough that the rest of the building is out of frame. Two arched openings stacked one above the other, each holding a flight of pale stone steps climbing away. Hard sun lands inside the openings so what shows through glows warmer than the face of the wall, and the reveals throw hard-edged shadows across themselves. The shade on the wall is a deeper version of the wall's own colour. the arched openings are three storeys tall in a wall that reads as single storey. Photographed on film, fine grain through the mid-tones and holding in the darks. Ceremonial and hot, a building that organises a procession.
